Regional Victory in ARTiculation Public Speaking Competition
Back
Pupils from Jane Austen College and Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form recently took part in the ARTiculation public speaking competition, with not only two pupils reaching the regional finals, but one also gaining first place!
To kick off the competition, an internal heat was conducted with all of Jane Austen College's Year 12 Fine Art students, where the teachers nominated two winners to compete; Annabelle from Jane Austen College, and Georgia from Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form. These two pupils were then invited to the regional final that took place in Norwich at the Sainsbury's Centre for Visual Arts, in front of an audience of parents/carers and teachers.
Writer and Curator, Stephen Feeke, was the adjudicator for this event and gave the two students this feedback:
Georgia
I thought this a great choice of topic and Georgia effectively brought out why conspicuous consumption still resonates as strongly today (if not more so) as it did some thirty years ago. I enjoyed her combination of textual and image analysis. I felt worried she may have lost confidence during the course of the presentation. There was no need. This was good work with great potential. Well done!
Annabelle
This presentation cast Turner as a radical and it felt both confident and convincing from the outset. I was fascinated by Annabelle’s use of descriptive language, which rendered Turner’s use of subject matter, colour and texture visceral and alive; a very worthy winner.
ARTiculation is a national public speaking competition for students aged 16-19, run by the National Gallery. Students are invited to talk for ten minutes about a piece of art, architecture, or an artefact in a museum or gallery setting of their choice. They are then judged on the content, structure, delivery and originality of their presentation.
