Linguistics (English Language)

Back

Linguistics is the scientific study of how language works.  In this A-level course, you will study the ways in which language is shaped by the individuals and societies who use it, as well how language shapes us.

You will explore how language varies, depending on the contexts of production and reception, critically evaluate how language choices (both spoken and written) can create personal identities, and investigate how language varies over time.   In addition, you will study the development of both speech and writing in children from birth to eight years old.

In the second year, you will undertake your own language investigation, focusing on specific research topics within the wider area of language and gender.

The majority of the assessment is via examination at the end of the course; however, there is also a NEA coursework component.  For your NEA coursework component, you will look at the craft of language and produce your own original writing piece.
