Rose Ottaway Wins Future Forward’s Year 12 Student of the Year 2022-23
BackJane Austen College Sixth Form is delighted to congratulate Year 13 student, Rose Ottaway on receiving the 2022-23 Award for Year 12 Student of the Year in the Future Forward Programme.
Future Forward is a free and innovative mentoring scheme by University of East Anglia. The programme is aimed at young people from Year 9 (summer term) to Year 13, providing tailored, one-to-one support over a period of two or four years.
Through the scheme, students have the opportunity to work on a broad range of skills including communication, research skills, and reflective and critical thinking. The programme also helps to develop students’ aspirations for the future: motivation, exploring their options for the future and accessing higher education networks. The programme also provides students with the Gatsby Benchmark 7 (encounters with further and higher education) achievement.
At its end-of-year celebration, the Future Forward programme honours one student from each of the four Year groups (Years 10 to 13) as Student of the Year. For the 2022-23 award, Rose was acknowledged for her dedication to the scheme as well as her positive attitude.
Rose is currently studying her A-Levels in Psychology, Geography and Environmental Science, and aspires to study Education, specifically as an SEN Co-ordinator.
Rose said:
“I am very grateful for the opportunities Future Forward has provided me with and the skills it has enhanced. The programme is very successful and has helped me develop my wider knowledge and has supported me on things such as writing my personal statement and researching different pathways for my future career!”
Her citation from her learning mentor, Leon Frere-Smith read:
“Rose has made a strong start to her Future Forward journey. She has shown excellent commitment to the programme and worked hard at developing her skills. She always attends mentoring with a positive attitude and has engaged fully with the opportunities that Future Forward has to offer. She impressed everybody on our recent residential trip to Nottingham with her resilient spirit – despite having to spend the whole time on crutches she still took part in all of our activities with a ‘can do’ attitude (with plenty of walking involved!)”
